Gambling law in Maryland: what to know before you go

Maryland's casinos date from a 2008 constitutional amendment, approved by nearly 59 percent of voters, that allowed slot machines at a handful of sites around the state. The first, Hollywood Casino Perryville in Cecil County, opened in 2010, and later changes added table games and a sixth license. Today Maryland casinos range from MGM National Harbor outside Washington, D.C., and Live! Casino near Baltimore-Washington airport to Horseshoe Baltimore, Ocean Downs near Ocean City and Rocky Gap in the western mountains. All six are privately owned and licensed by the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency.

• Regulator: the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency runs the state lottery and regulates the six casinos and sports wagering.
• Minimum age: 21 at every casino. There are no tribal casinos in Maryland.
• Casino types: six privately owned commercial casinos with slots and table games.
• Nonprofit fraternal and veterans' clubs in the nine Eastern Shore counties may run up to five slot machines each - those halls are not casinos.
• Sports betting is legal, both retail and online (online since November 2022). Online casino games are not.

Before you visit any casino in Maryland, it's worth confirming a few things: the minimum age (21 in Maryland), what photo ID you'll need at the door, and the opening hours for the day you're going. Larger resort casinos often run 24/7 and add hotels, dining and entertainment, while smaller venues keep set hours and may focus on slots and electronic games.
